Turkish Time

Leave a comment on this blog by Wednesday November 23 to win$20 worth of vouchers to purchase some Turkish Bread!

I went to Turkey just over 12 months ago and fell in love with the place. The culture was amazing, the architecture was stunning and the people were very friendly. The thing I loved most about Turkey was the food. Eggs and tomato for breakfast, meatballs for lunch, a kebab for dinner and followed by Turkish delight for dessert – this I miss. One thing that I know I can still get my hands on without leaving the country is Turkish Bread.

(Some of the restaurants in Istanbul)

The Turkish Bread still gives me as much enjoyment now back in Australia as it did in Turkey. This is partly because I have realised how versatile the bread is and keep discovering new ways of using it.

Although I’m not much of a sharing person, Turkish Bread is ideal for when friends come around for a drink. It is a perfect accompaniment to dips and really brings out the flavour – my favourite dip is a chunky basil and pesto. It’s so easy to slice up and share. When there are leftovers (if there’s any), they are never gone to waste.

With the Spring Carnival Season now in full flight in Melbourne, I’ve been able to enjoy heaps of nibblies. I think by now my friends would realise that this is my staple item when attending a barbecue – and I’m not ashamed by my lack of variety because I know how much this is enjoyed by everyone else.

The Turkish bread at Bakers Delight is made from an ancient old recipe using polish dough. It is baked fresh on stone after a 20 hour process of fermenting and resting, so it has a full of flavour and has an open texture. It still has a strong Turkey-feel about it with the olive oil pasted on it from Turkey. This is what makes it taste so good.

I find that I can use Turkish bread in so many different ways; use a Turkish Bread Roll to make a focaccia, slice open Turkish Bread and make mini-pizzas, cut up small pieces and make toast  with scrambled eggs, or even just as a side dish to a bowl of pasta.

My favourite way to have Turkish Bread is to make a focaccia with my favourite fillings: Grilled chicken breast, tomato, capsicum, lettuce, zucchini and cheese.

As it is such tasty bread, there are so many ways to enjoy it. For your chance to win $20 worth of vouchers, tell us how you best enjoy your Turkish Bread.

We even use it to make pizza, the flavour is just so good.

  • nicole drage says:

Whilst I subsitute it with everything I usually would use bread for , I particularly enjoy these two reciepes the most:

Turkish bread spead with garlic & olive oil, lightly toasted, fresh chopped tomotoes, red onion, chopped pieces of avocado, fresh basil, touch of coriander , ground pepper & salt, and finished with a drizzled of balsamic vinegar. Perfect lunch option but I tend to eat anytime of the day.

I also love to use the turkish bread when making a dip platter. I use it fresh mostly and enjoy it with a spinach and ricotta dip made as follows:
frozen spinach, thawed, fresh ricotta, carton sour cream, chopped chives, 30g packet spring vegetable dried soup, finely chopped red onion. but tend to add it to all my platters perfect with kalamata olives, roasted capscium or any other anitpasto or cheese.

Its definately a winner with the kids. Thanks a million for all the varieties and fresh options you continue to make. Awesome.

to be honest i like it best sweet.i use it as base for the following desert:

  • Jess says:

ok so this is going to sound really weird and gross to most but here goes. The ONLY way to eat bakers delight turkish bread is as follows (its nicknamed jess’ jaff so here goes). Fresh turkish bread with plenty of avocado, a thin layer of vegemite (yep i said vegemite), hommus dip, chunky basil pesto, baked beans, jarlsberg cheese slices and tasty cheese pieces!! Yep everything all together and mixed up. It can get quite messy as you can imagine with melted cheese and dip spewing out everywhere but thats the best part as you can scrape that off as it cooks and scoff it. You must eat it RED HOT and totally cooked through so cheese melts perfectly. I know it sounds bizarre but dont judge it til you try it go on i dare ya!!! AND it would not be possible without the thick gorgeous bakers turkish bread. Go on give it a try i dare ya!!!!!

A few years ago I went to Germany, and had a German Kebab. Instead of using flat bread and rolling it like they do here, they used Turkish bread in the shape of a diamond, toasted so it was like a bowl, and they filled it with kebab meat, salad, feta cheese and garlic sauce, it was awesome, the toasted sesame seed coated crunchy exterior, but soft filling made it very different and very tasty.

turkish bread is so delicious because of its denser texture and the way it doesnt get soggy or fall apart when you add all the delicious fillings to make it a gourmet meal as well as being versatile enough to be eaten from breakfast through to dinner or just as a snack.
