Chia – understanding the origins

Posted by Orry at September 26, 2011 in Real bread

Leave a comment on our blog by Wednesday 12 October for a chance to win a Chia pack prize which includes Chia Seeds, Chia running singlets and freshly baked Chia Bread.

Bread has come a long way over the years. From the humble white loaf, to the introduction of wholemeal - we now have a range of choices to select from. Sometimes it is difficult to understand the health benefit claims listed on bread packages. It can even be more difficult to understand what is beneficial for your family.

I thought I would use our Wholemeal Chia Bread as an example of what benefits you can look out for in bread and how they look to assist you and your family in dietary intake.

Below is the nutritional values of the Chia Bread

Servings per product: 9 (16 toast slices + 2 crusts)
Serving size (Ave.) 77g (2 toast slices)

Ave qty. per serving % daily intake ** per serving Ave qty per 100grams
Energy 829KJ 10% 1010KJ
Protein 9.2 18% 11.2
Fats, total -saturated 3.3g                                   0.4g 5%                                    2% 4.0g                           0.5g
Carbohydrates – sugars 29.0g                           1.1g 9%                             Â
1%
35.4g                      Â
1.3g
Dietary Fibre 6.6g 22% 8.1g
Sodium 390mg 17% 476mg

Ingredients:

Wholemeal Wheat Flour (60%), Water, Chia Seed (6%), Yeast, Iodised Salt, Vegetable Oil (Soya Bean), Emulsifier (481), Wheat Flour, Soy Flour, Vitamins (Thiamin, Folic Acid)

** Percentage daily intakes are based on an average adult diet of 8700. Your daily intakes may be higher or lower depending on your energy needs

But what does that all mean?

Well looking at this table, the bread is:

High in fibre – which helps with maintaining health insides. In fact the Wholemeal Chia Bread contains 25% more fibre than ordinary supermarket bread.

Chia also has key minerals (like magnesium and iron) – this is good for healthy muscles and to maintain energy levels.

Protein – the Wholemeal Chia Bread contains levels of protein to help keep you feeling fuller for longer.

The percentage of daily intake is a great way for you to guide yourself with regards to purchasing a product. However some things you may not see on this table, but are of benefit to your family is; Chia (the seed in the product) is the richest plant based source of omega-3 ALA, dietary fibre and protein, helping you maintain a healthy body and mind. In fact, just two slices of our Chia Bread contain 100% of the adequate intake of omega-3 ALA for women and children.

Australia is now the world’s largest producer of Chia and Bakers Delight is proud to offer these whole seeds to you direct from the Kimberly region in WA. These seeds, are virtually picked straight from the fields in Kunanarra and placed directly into the bread.

Here are some of the amazing images of the fields where Chia is grown.

Are the Omega3 fats in the Chia destroyed or denatured by the heat of baking?
Does the quoted ALA data take this nutrient loss into account?
We are told that around 10:1 ratio of omega6 to omega3 is best. What is the ratio in the Chia Bread recipe?

  • Candy Walker says:

    Chialicious.
We had this last night for the first time – I was very impressed.

I’m such a dummy, i thought i read that you were now making chai bread (wow, tea bread, that would be interesting, i’m wondering how or if it could be done) but chia thats different and sounds delicious and is obviously healthy for us..
I’m sure if its half as tasty as your pumpkin bread it won’t even last a day in my house!!!!

  • ST says:

Sounds interesting. I’m yet to try but have seen on my weekly visit to the stores. Will need to grab some next time – should be a good fuel for the weekend activities :)

  • Catie says:

I’d only really ever heard of Chia as in “Chia Pets” and basically thought it was alfalfa. Then today I see Vita Weet with Chia in the supermarket, and now read this — I do hope I’m one of the winners cos I’d love to share a Chia bread with my mum to see if we’ll switch from, or add to, your other yummy grain breads.

  • Tas says:

Can you please put some Chia seeds in the cheese and bacon rolls. My children love them and I would love some more wholegrains in the bread. I usually buy the chia loaves and the kids love those too.

  • Evelyn says:

I’ve never been a “seed” person (hates wholemeal, nuts, seeds etc) BUT Chia Bread got me ADDICTED!

Cant resist the soft texture when its fresh neither can I resist it when it’s toasted. Aroma of the toasted Chia seeds lingers in my mouth with EVERY SINGLE BITE!

My 3yo hates bread but now she’s a CHIA Bread girl! We’re over the moon that she loves Chia bread because it’s such a healthy choice.
