Chia – understanding the origins
Posted by Orry at September 26, 2011 in Real bread
Leave a comment on our blog by Wednesday 12 October for a chance to win a Chia pack prize which includes Chia Seeds, Chia running singlets and freshly baked Chia Bread.
Bread has come a long way over the years. From the humble white loaf, to the introduction of wholemeal -Â we now have a range of choices to select from. Sometimes it is difficult to understand the health benefit claims listed on bread packages. It can even be more difficult to understand what is beneficial for your family.
I thought I would use our Wholemeal Chia Bread as an example of what benefits you can look out for in bread and how they look to assist you and your family in dietary intake.
Below is the nutritional values of the Chia Bread
Servings per product: 9 (16 toast slices + 2 crusts)
Serving size (Ave.) 77g (2 toast slices)
| Â | Ave qty. per serving | % daily intake ** per serving | Ave qty per 100grams |
| Energy | 829KJ | 10% | 1010KJ |
| Protein | 9.2 | 18% | 11.2 |
| Fats, total -saturated | 3.3g                                  0.4g | 5%                                   2% | 4.0g                          0.5g |
| Carbohydrates – sugars | 29.0g                          1.1g | 9%                             1% |
35.4g                       1.3g |
| Dietary Fibre | 6.6g | 22% | 8.1g |
| Sodium | 390mg | 17% | 476mg |
Ingredients:
Wholemeal Wheat Flour (60%), Water, Chia Seed (6%), Yeast, Iodised Salt, Vegetable Oil (Soya Bean), Emulsifier (481), Wheat Flour, Soy Flour, Vitamins (Thiamin, Folic Acid)
** Percentage daily intakes are based on an average adult diet of 8700. Your daily intakes may be higher or lower depending on your energy needs
But what does that all mean?
Well looking at this table, the bread is:
High in fibre – which helps with maintaining health insides. In fact the Wholemeal Chia Bread contains 25% more fibre than ordinary supermarket bread.
Chia also has key minerals (like magnesium and iron) – this is good for healthy muscles and to maintain energy levels.
Protein – the Wholemeal Chia Bread contains levels of protein to help keep you feeling fuller for longer.
The percentage of daily intake is a great way for you to guide yourself with regards to purchasing a product. However some things you may not see on this table, but are of benefit to your family is; Chia (the seed in the product) is the richest plant based source of omega-3 ALA, dietary fibre and protein, helping you maintain a healthy body and mind. In fact, just two slices of our Chia Bread contain 100% of the adequate intake of omega-3 ALA for women and children.
Australia is now the world’s largest producer of Chia and Bakers Delight is proud to offer these whole seeds to you direct from the Kimberly region in WA. These seeds, are virtually picked straight from the fields in Kunanarra and placed directly into the bread.
Here are some of the amazing images of the fields where Chia is grown.

I have heard so much about the Chia bread tried the seeds with yogurt now I would love to try the bread so I can compare.
I bought Bakers Delight Chia bread by accident as I picked up what I thought was white bread (the only type my kids will eat). The chia is white and therefore disguised in the bread – no comments or complaints – every bit eaten. I’ll certainly buy it again.
Interesting Carly – any feedback on the difference?
Love Chia
yummy bread
I have to admit to being more than a little dubious about Chia bread… I remember having a Chia pet as a kid. However, after giving it a try, it’s my new favourite.
Haha Sara,
Used to love Chia Pets. Glad its slightly different though!
Tastes great, full of goodness and the kids eat it. A Winner all round!!!!
nice
cant resist the scones when I go in for my loaf of toast wholemeal and last time we were given a roll to try – delicious and I’m sure it was a chia roll as are all the rolls there – when our Bakers Delight say their bread is fresh it’s so true – delicious
Chia seeds are so good for you. To incorporate them into a ‘staple’ food is brilliant….
Bakers Delight, I love the way you keep researching the most healthy way to make bread, no wonder you’re so good at it. Love that it’s high in protein, to keep my kids fuller for longer (and less likely to ask me for MORE FOOD!!)
I can not think of a more delicious bread than chia, whether it be plain with butter or with any other spread. Thank you for bringing Chia to us.
It taste fantastic and its healthy.Great for the kids.
A W E S O M E ! ! ! !
And tastes FAB 2…*******
I love the nutty texture of Chia wholemeal bread. Glad of all the extra nutrients it gives me too. Thanks Bakers Delight for the different varieties you provide..
I could never get my children to eat anything other than plain white bread, but I decided to try some of the Chia Bread and they love it. The bread is great as it is high in Omega 3 which my kids do not normally get much of, as neither of them like eggs or fish. Thank you Bakers Delight for this great loaf!!!
Yumm! Makes me feel extra healthy when I eat it
My Son (age 12) will not eat anything but white bread which slightly does my head in. HUGE thanks to your chia bread as he absolutely loves it and it eases my mind knowing he is getting some goodness in him!

A slice of chia would go perfectly with a cup of tea and snuggles from the hubby in the morning!
What an interesting video, very informative, now I know I did the right thing in switching to Chia Bread.. We have been eating Chia Wholemeal bread for ages, grandkids too, now thanks to one of your Baker’s Delight assistants, I am growing Chia sprouts to use in sandwiches and salads.
Glad you liked the video Lynne
My young son would not eat wholemeal or wholegrain bread at all – it was always just plain old white ‘ not very good for you’ type bread, until he tasted Chia bread!! Now he’s always coming back for seconds.
cheesymites when they are straight from the oven are simply the best…
Chia bread from Bakers Delight? They’re the best thing since sliced bread!!
Has amazing health properties, gives wonderful texture to bread and is delish! What’s not to chia for?
I recieved a sample of Chia bread when I visited Baker’s Delight, and read up on chia. It sounds like an awesome thing to have in your diet, and tasted great too.
A very nutritious bread & fills you up unlike most other run of the mill white breads out there in the supermarkets.
Chia your way to a healthy day, munch, munch away
I’ve never tried Wholemeal Chia Bread before, but after reading this article and everyone’s comments I’m keen to purchase some and try it out!
Love this bread. Thanks Bakers Delight.
Why is it taking so long to for moderation.
Am looking forward to trying Chia bread
Bakers delight have very nice choice of bread
AH bread, just love it all. Thank you
Very disappointed that its back to the old cards in S.A, You have to spend $6.00 to receive a stamp. When you buy one loaf at a time so we have it fresh the new cards do not give you an incentive to buy from Bakers Delight!
Regards,
Wendy
Chia bread is delicious & healthy – like all the others at BAKERS DELIGHT!
We love wholemeal chia……so much I have to buy at least a loaf a day!
I always buy wholegrain hi-fibre bread for our family and, having sampled Chia bread at our local Bakers Delight, my 10 yr old son has declared it his favourite, so I have my freezer well-stocked with BD wholemeal chia bread. Our local BD were recently giving away Chia Shots (pkts of Chia seeds) and my 12 yr old son ate the Chia seeds on their own and declared them delicious!!! Thanks Bakers Delight for making such a healthy and tasty bread that the whole family enjoys.
Tried the Chia bread over the weekend at the local Baker’s Delight, it is delish~
Good for you and tastes good too, what more could you ask for!
chia seeds looks like superfood. I would love to try chia seeds and try to incorporate it in our diet…
Love Chia bread , it’s delicious
chia bread is so delicious, i am not to keen to share it with my missus,
i want it all for myself, as it is so yummy,
moving down in to my tummy,
want to eat it day and night,
as bakers delight you got it just right,.
best bread ever, with those delightful crusts,
a bread that is great tasting, and one you can trust..
got to get to bakers delight to pick up my fix, one that is a big must.
I am torn between two favourite breads. Any chance of combining them: Chia and Hi Fibre/Low GI. With a Chia/Hi Fibre/Low GI loaf? That would make my day.
wow our whole family loves chia bread and my 6 year old gets excited as he would eat it for breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner
Chia seeds are such a fabulous, healthy ingredient – I eat a tablespoon everyday.
They are full of healthy fats – perfect for growing bodies too.
I’d love to try some.
would love to try this. sounds yummmmyyyyyyy
Chia packs a punch for such a small seed proving great things do come in small packages! I’m happy, healthy and wise thanks to my daily dose of chia – whether it’s bread, rolls or straight from the seed-thanks Bakers Delight for knowing what I like
I LOVE Chia, so the idea of that in bread is awesome, and more incentive to visit Baker’s Delight!
Sounds delicious and healthy for the family too!
what a great idea and from australia!
Are the Omega3 fats in the Chia destroyed or denatured by the heat of baking?
Does the quoted ALA data take this nutrient loss into account?
We are told that around 10:1 ratio of omega6 to omega3 is best. What is the ratio in the Chia Bread recipe?
Chialicious.
We had this last night for the first time – I was very impressed.
Looking at the ingredient table a pinch less salt and it would seem a perfect food for a healthy diet, ticking all the recommended boxes.
Never heard of Chia seeds till Bakers Delight introduced their Chia Seeds Bread. Love it . Thank you for the introducing the goodness of Chia seeds.
Never heard of Chia seeds till Bakers Delight introduced their Chia Seeds Bread. Love it . Thank you for introducing the goodness of Chia seeds.
Yet another delicious addition to the Baker’s Delight bread family. We are all so lucky to be so spoilt for choice!!
My kids love it, nice healthy lunches, YAY!
Wow! This sounds very impressive, can’t wait to try it!
What a great product! This will be perfect for me and my family.
sounds so good and yummy look forward to trying it soon
We love Chia bread in our house. White chia with avocado + tuna in chilli oil is a favourite lunch, even for the 2 year old!
I’m such a dummy, i thought i read that you were now making chai bread (wow, tea bread, that would be interesting, i’m wondering how or if it could be done) but chia thats different and sounds delicious and is obviously healthy for us..
I’m sure if its half as tasty as your pumpkin bread it won’t even last a day in my house!!!!
Sounds interesting. I’m yet to try but have seen on my weekly visit to the stores. Will need to grab some next time – should be a good fuel for the weekend activities
I’d only really ever heard of Chia as in “Chia Pets” and basically thought it was alfalfa. Then today I see Vita Weet with Chia in the supermarket, and now read this — I do hope I’m one of the winners cos I’d love to share a Chia bread with my mum to see if we’ll switch from, or add to, your other yummy grain breads.
Can you please put some Chia seeds in the cheese and bacon rolls. My children love them and I would love some more wholegrains in the bread. I usually buy the chia loaves and the kids love those too.
I’ve never been a “seed” person (hates wholemeal, nuts, seeds etc) BUT Chia Bread got me ADDICTED!
Cant resist the soft texture when its fresh neither can I resist it when it’s toasted. Aroma of the toasted Chia seeds lingers in my mouth with EVERY SINGLE BITE!
My 3yo hates bread but now she’s a CHIA Bread girl! We’re over the moon that she loves Chia bread because it’s such a healthy choice.
